A better eatery in Municipio Rosarito

Rosarito dining choices are relatively ghastly unless you have an affinity for spicy Mexican cuisine and music (?) played too loudly. I do not particularly enjoy most local restaurant food for some reason. But Ruben's seems a little different. It has a good atmosphere (I like the patio) and the food is good, at least by my standards.

Real Estate Group To Award Tijuana Officer For His Outstanding Service

June 12, 2007

ROSARITO BEACH , BAJA CALIFORNIA , MEXICO ---When Tracy Collingridge was pulled over by a police officer in Tijuana as she was driving to the border, she wasn't expecting a happy ending.

She thought she'd probably get a ticket --- she had lingered a long time at the last stop sign as she figured out directions.

Or worse, the officer might hint that he wanted a bribe, and that could ruin the sales opportunity she had with the Canadian client that Collingridge was driving back from a new Baja development.

Collingridge, a sales associate for Trump Oceanfront Resort Baja, a few miles south of Tijuana , had lost one or two clients in the past who said police had solicited bribes. Instead, this police officer simply asked why she had waited so long at the stop sign.

When she said she was slightly lost because the usual route to the border had been closed, the officer guided her to the pedestrian border crossing, where she delivered her client, then back to the scenic road south.

That was after the officer, in perfect English, asked her client: "Are you thinking of moving to Mexico ? It's a wonderful place. You'll love it here."

For that outstanding service, Sub-Chief Julio Cesar Huante Garcia will receive an award from the Rosarito-Ensenada chapter of the Association of Mexican Professional Realtors (AMPI).

The presentation will be at 8:30 a.m. on June 20 in the Quixote Salon at the Rosarito Beach Hotel,

"His service and attitude were just so exceptional, we wanted to recognize it," said Gustavo Torres, AMPI chapter president. "He surely reflects well on the many fine officers who are in the area."

For Huante, 37, a six-year veteran who has command of 32 officers, the actions came easily.

"It's all in your upbringing," Huante said in a recent interview. By coincidence, his first job at age 15 was as a bus boy at the Rosarito Beach Hotel, where he also learned the value of tourism and treating people well.

"I love my city and help tourists every chance I can," said Huante, who has worked with various tourist organizations in Tijuana .

He also emphasizes that attitude to the officers he commands. "When we begin our shift, I tell them to be nice to people, always be friendly," Huante said.

He realizes that not every police officer follows that advice. A few do behave badly and solicit bribes but "they're disappearing," he said.

As for Collingridge, she's happy that Sub-Chief Huante is there as an example.

As for her Canadian client: "She certainly laughed and said it was a great story to go home and tell people."

"It would be great if this could happen all the time," Collingridge said. "You'd never get that kind of treatment in the U.S. or Canada ."
